1700s: IRELAND COMES TO EDINBURGH

Irish immigrants arrive in Scotland over the course of the 18th Century, growing a community in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh known as 'Little Ireland'. St Patrick's Church is resultantly established.

Two men key to the future formation of Hibernian Football Club, Edward Hannan and Michael Whelahan, meet for the first time as a result of the Catholic Young Men's Society opening a branch in St Patrick's Chruch.
Hibernian Football Club is born on Friday 6th August 1875. Father Hannan is elected as manager and Michael Whelahan as the first captain.
After several failed attempts, Hibernians are allowed to join the Edinburgh Football Association and the Scottish Football Association.
Hibernians win and retain the Edinburgh Association Cup shortly after playing their first ever Scottish Cup fixture against Hearts.
