Position Full Back
Billy Simpson joined the club from Edina Hibs at the start of season 1963/64.
After attempts to sign full back Davie Holt and inside forward Willie Hamilton from Hearts had fallen through the previous midweek, manager Walter Galbraith gave Simpson and Pat Stanton their debuts against Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday 5th October 1963. Both players performed well, with Stanton scoring his first goal for Hibs in the 4-3 defeat.
During his seven seasons at Easter Road, Simpson made 44 league appearances in addition to several more in the League Cup, Scottish Cup and Summer Cup. His best season came in 1965-66 when he formed part of a formidable full back pairing with left back Joe Davis, playing in Hibernian's record 11-1 league win against Hamilton Academicals at Easter Road on Saturday 6th Nov 1965, all three Fairs Cup games against Valencia - including a third game play off - and an 11-2 home win against Alloa in the League Cup that same year.
After losing his place shortly after to Bobby Duncan, Simpson regained the position when Duncan suffered a broken leg in a game against Celtic.
Simpson's last appearance for Hibs came in a 2-1 victory over Clyde at Easter Road on 24th April 1968 and, after leaving Hibs to join Falkirk in 1970, he saw service with Albion Rovers and Alloa before ending his playing days at Cowdenbeath.
Billy Simpson died suddenly in September 2009, aged 64.
